Glucocil, a self-proclaimed Americas #1 blood sugar dietary supplement claims to regulate blood glucose levels. According to the manufacturer, Glucocil is formulated with 14 natural ingredients that work together to:
Impair glucose production in the liver
Reduce glucose absorption in the intestines
Improve insulin sensitivity
But, what caught my attention is its popularity; Glucocil has garnered a lot of attention in the online platform accumulating over 1900 reviews on Amazon with a 4.0 rating.
Could it be the supplements are effective, or is it another false advertisement? Read on to find out.
1. What It Is: A Closer Look at Glucocil
Americas #1 total blood glucose optimizer
Glucocil is a blood glucose-regulating dietary supplement formulated with 14 herbal extracts and vitamins. According to Neuliven Health, these supplements can promote healthy weight loss, blood sugar, and increase energy.
2. History of the Brand
Neuliven Health, founded in 2006, is behind Glucocil. The Company’s mission is to provide well-researched products to regulate blood sugar.
Neuliven Health is based in San Diego, California, USA.
3. Ingredients Used
Glucocil contains a blend of herbal extracts proven to regulate blood glucose.
Glucocil active ingredients include:
Mulberry Extract
Mulberry leaves can reduce post-prandial blood glucose if combined with low-carb diets [1].
In a double-blind, Placebo-controlled study, Mulberry extract was reported to decrease insulin and total glucose without any significant side effects [2, 3].
Chromium
Glucocil contains Chromium Picolinate, an essential mineral which is easily absorbed. One study discovered that Chromium supplements could significantly improve glycemic control, reduce triglycerides and increase HDL levels.
The study also reported that an intake of 200 mcg could improve glycemic control [4]. Furthermore, chromium supplements have been found to reduce lipid levels and enhance insulin sensitivity [5].
Chromium picolinate can also reduce food intake, cravings, and hunger. However, an 8-week study reported that you need about 1000 mcg/day to aid in weight loss [6].
Glucocil contains 200 mcg which may affect the glucose levels, but not hunger, appetite or weight loss.
Banaba
Banaba leaf extracts hypoglycemic effects are attributed to corosolic acid which enhances cellular glucose uptake, glucose sensitivity, decreases serum cholesterol and triglycerides [7].
Berberine
Berberine extracts have been used for decades in traditional medicine especially in China. In a study, Berberine was reported to be as effective as Metformin in regulating blood sugar [8, 9].
Additionally, it can enhance glucose uptake and consumption without insulin [10].
Cinnamon
Cinnamon is rich in antioxidants, which are effective in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes [11].
Furthermore, cinnamon can increase glucose utilization and reducing insulin resistance. Plus, it blocks digestive enzymes that break down carbs, lowering blood sugar [12,13].
Fish Oil
Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids which improve heart health by increasing HDL levels, lowering triglycerides, reducing blood pressure, and arrhythmias [14, 15, 16, 17].
Alpha Lipoic Acid
ALA is found in body cells, and it regulates cellular energy. Furthermore, it can inhibit liver glucose production and increase sensitivity.
Vitamin Blend
Glucocil contains a blend of vitamins;
Vitamin B1 that promote carbohydrate and fatty acid metabolism for energy
B6 enhances protein metabolism
B12 lowers homocysteine levels and supports blood cells
D enhances cardiovascular health and bone health
Other herbal extracts include veld grape stem extract, Insulina, and Gymnema Sylvestre.
Although the above-mentioned herbal extracts can regulate blood levels, Glucocil does not include the amount used. So, it difficult to determine if the supplements can improve insulin sensitivity.
4. How It Works
Glucocil works by regulating and supporting the three vital processes of blood glucose:
It reduces the absorption of glucose and other carbs. The supplements reduce the efficiency of the alpha-glucosidase, which affects carbohydrate breakdown.
It impairs liver glucose production
Glucocil activates insulin receptors and improves insulin sensitivity
5. Benefits and Results
Glucocil benefits include:
It promotes heart and circulatory health
The supplements reduce carbohydrates absorption after meals
It increases energy
Improves insulin uptake
6. Does it Work?
These supplements can optimize blood glucose, but they are not an effective weight loss supplements.
Glucocil blend of herbal extracts can improve glucose levels. Additionally, most customers have reported positive results after using these supplements. However, the Neuliven does not indicate the dosage used, which makes it hard to determine its effectiveness.
Furthermore, as a weight loss supplement, Glucocil seems to be ineffective. As aforementioned, Chromium, an active ingredient in the supplements can aid in weight loss, but the dosage is little to produce any significant results.
7. How to Take the Supplements
Take two softgels with meals at lunch and dinner for the first three days. Afterward, increase the dosage to two softgels per meal.
N.B You can take Glucocil at breakfast if it is your most substantial meal of the day.
8. Who Should Use Glucocil
Glucocil is recommended
Overweight/obese
Prediabetic
People who struggle with blood sugar, or have a history of diabetes.
9. Will It Work with Diet
A low-carb diet will work great with these supplements.
10. As Far As Taste Goes
Glucocil is a softgel supplement, and the taste is not something to worry about. However, some users have complained that the softgels are too large.
Side effects
According to the website, Glucocil can cause mild discomfort, gas, bloating, and constipation due to the unabsorbed carbohydrates.
11. Lawsuits
Currently, there are no lawsuits against Neuliven Health or Glucocil. However, in 2013, FDA sent a warning letter to the Company because of their claims.
When it was launched, Glucocil was marketed as a drug for regulating blood glucose, which was a direct violation of the FDA act section 201. According to FDA, a product can be classified as drug after successful clinical trials, which Neuliven Health hadn’t done.
The organization sent a letter, requesting the company to withdraw their claims.
It appears Neuliven has adhered to the rules and changed Glucocil to a dietary supplement.
12. Alternatives
PharmaPure Sugar blocker is the primary competitor. It contains chromium, Gymnema Sylvestre, and vanadyl sulfate which help to reduce sugar cravings.
13. What Customers Are Saying
Glucocil has a 4.0 rating with 1,906 reviews on Amazon., 1362, are positive, while 544 negative reviews. Most of the users have praised the supplements for their effectiveness in regulating blood glucose.
“These weight loss supplements have reduced my glucose fasting numbers from 174 to 97 on average. Furthermore, it didn’t give me any side effects.
“ I have used Glucocil for the last two years, and it has helped me control my blood sugar. I do, however, keep track of my sugar and carbohydrate intake to keep my sugar levels at optimal levels.”
“The supplements lowered my blood sugar. But, I experienced headaches, insomnia, and body aches. Glucocil works, but I don’t like the side effects, so I have to go back to using Metformin.
Glucocil seems to work in regulating the blood sugar levels. Additionally, its ingredients have proven to offer significant benefits. However, I have one problem with Glucocil:
Although there is research on the herbs used, no scientific study exists that can support or validate the specific formula used.
Furthermore, pre-diabetes or diabetes is not a condition you can manage by yourself. You need to work with a health professional to guide you in monitoring your blood sugar.
I would recommend regulating the blood sugar naturally using diet and exercise before resulting to supplements. Other tips include:
Controlling your carb intake and choose foods with a low glycemic index
Increasing fiber intake
Stay hydrated
Manage your stress levels through meditation and yoga
Does Glucocil regulate blood sugar? Probably. The supplements contains a blend of herbs that can optimize blood glucose. However, as a weight loss supplement, Glucocil has proven to be ineffective.
